Mound Defeats Monticello for First Win

The MW boys hockey team hosted the Monticello Moose Tues Dec 7 at Thaler Arena. Monticello was playing their 2nd game of the young season having lost to Bemidji 3-6 the previous week. The lineup for Monticello features (junior) Gage Torrel, a forward his coach describes as “gifted” with 26 goals/19 assists last year.
The game started with both teams working hard on the forecheck and was very physical for the first 5 minutes. Play settled down until with 4 ½ minutes left in the period White Hawk Alex Bakke fed a pass from behind the net to Hunter Smith who skated down the slot with his stick on the ice and beat the Moose goalie for his first varsity  goal.   Smith had a big night with the goal and 2 assists. The goal was the first time this season the White Hawks have scored in the opening period.
 Monticello Came out on the attack in the 2nd with MW goalie Andy Seats making 3 sharp saves until at 5.36 Andrej Stefancik scored on a backhand off a feed from Torrel. Later in the period with MW shorthanded, Monticello took 2 penaltys in a row with the second coming right after the first had expired.  The White Hawks took advantage when (senior) Charlie Hales scored a power play goal at 14.01 when Smith skated around the Monticello goal , fired a low shot that came out to Hales who wasted no time to beat the Moose goaltender. The period ended when with 19 seconds left, MWs Riley Williams skated over the Monticello blue line all alone and was tripped from behind resulting in a White Hawk power play to start the 3rd. End of the 2nd MW 2-Mont.-1
 MW scored 2 early goals in the 3rd. the first came at 1.55 off a wrist shot from the point by Joe Graphenteen . On the ensuing faceoff (junior) Alex Bakke scored with an assist from Smith just 11 seconds after the Graphenteen goal. After the MW goals, Monticello took a time out and came back with 2 goals, one on a wrap around and the 2nd by Moose forward Torrel. This closed the gap to 4-3. At 8.56 MWs Riley Williams scored when (senior) Kirby Horgan skated in from the boards in the offensive zone, put a shot on net that came out to Williams 15 ft in front of the net. Mont. was unable to get the puck past MW goalie Seats in the last 9 minutes of the game. Final, White Hawks 5, Moose 3

Due to weather conditions , the Sat. 12-11 game against Providence Academy was postponed. MW travels to Faribault Sat. 12-18 and St Louis Park Weds Dec. 22
