Ben Almquist had a goal and an assist and goaltender Jared Moe withstood a ferocious Edina attack in the third period as Holy Family beat the Hornets 2-1 in the first round of the Turkey Trot boys' hockey tournament at Plymouth Ice Center on Friday night.

Almquist put Holy Family up 1-0 just a minute and a half into the game, knocking a rebound of his own shot past Edina goalie Garrett Mackay. "I got the shot and went hard to the net. The puck came out and I shoved as hard as I could," said the junior forward.

He assisted on the Fire's second-period goal, scored by senior linemate Patrick Reddan, and Holy Angels took a 2-0 lead into the third period.

But Edina wouldn't stop fighting. Sophomore Mike Vorlicky scored a couple of minutes into the third period and Edina begin to put the pressure on Moe and the Fire. A penalty with 2:26 to play left Holy Family short-handed for most of the game's final moments.

"It was tough getting that penalty with two minutes to go," said Holy Fire coach Noel Rahn. "We didn't need any of that."

Moe stopped all 10 of the Hornets' shots in the final period, several of them in the closing minutes.

"He played well," Rahn said of his junior goalie. "He made some really key saves at the end of the game, and we needed it."

Edina's Mackay stopped 27 of the Fire's 29 shots on goal.

The victory was the first for Holy Family against Edina.  "This is a big win for us, mentally, going forward," Rahn said. "We're going to need to win games like this."
