Schwan Cup

By now, you've probably heard of the Schwan Cup. If you haven't, here's a look at what you've been missing. Thirty-two boys' hockey teams are entered in this year's tournament, now in its 10th year. The field is split into four divisions. Burnsville and Lakeville South are both in the Silver Division of the tournament, with opening-round games next Wednesday at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine. The Cougars open play at 2:30 p.m. against Cretin-Derham Hall, followed immediately by the Blaze's opening game against Holy Angels. The Silver Division finals are New Year's Day at Xcel Energy Center.

In the Gold Division, the Schwan Cup again runneth over with talent. Half of the eight teams entered this week ranked among the top 12 in Class 2A, including No. 3 Edina, No. 5 Duluth East, No. 9 Minnetonka and No. 10 Hill-Murray. St. Thomas Academy is ranked No. 1 in Class 1A with No. 3 Breck close behind. The talent level of individual players is also impressive. Edina' Steven Fogarty (Notre Dame recruit) will be the only player on the ice with a college commitment in place, but several players could join him at the next level, including Hornets teammate Max Everson, Hill-Murray's Ben Bahe and J.D. Cotroneo, Blaine's Jonny Brodzinski, Minnetonka's Derek Frawley and Max Coatta, White Bear Lake's Max Birkinbine and St. Thomas Academy's Taylor Fleming. Last year's Gold Division title game offered a preview of the Class 2A state tournament championship game on the same ice two months later. Minnetonka topped Edina 3-2 to win the Gold Division title but the Hornets knocked off the Skippers 4-2 to win the state title.
