Class 1A

There’s a new No. 1 in Class 1A, with Delano/Rockford earning six first-place votes to replace reigning Class 1A champion Hermantown atop the rankings. The No. 1 slot is well-deserved for the Tigers, who blew out No. 16 Blake to begin the season and avenging last year’s loss in the Section 2 finals by overcoming No. 4 Breck 5-2.

The Tigers field an experienced team this year, with 12 seniors and eight juniors. They are led by a trio of seniors, including Maine commit Ben Myers (4 goals, 14 assists), Michigan Tech commit Brian Halonen (5g, 8a) and John Keranen (7g, 3a). Get to know these seniors and the rest of the Delano/Rockford roster, as they’ll be around at the top of Class 1A all season.

After losing to defending Class 2A champion Wayzata and tying Lakeville South, Hermantown dropped to No. 2, receiving four first-place votes.

St. Paul Academy remains third after splitting two games last week, though that position is subject to change with a game against No. 5 St. Cloud Cathedral on Saturday.

Class 2A

For the second straight week, Eden Prairie comes in as the top team in the Minnesota coaches Class 2A poll, earning 13 first-place votes.

The Eagles began the season with two blowouts over a pair of unranked foes, outscoring them 11-2. Their next two opponents: Bloomington Jefferson and Benilde-St. Margaret’s, are also unranked, meaning the Dec. 15 showdown against No. 4-2A Elk River is the first true test for the defending Class 2A runners-up, a matchup which could provide the first major shakeup of this year’s top 5.

Receiving one first-place vote, Stillwater ranks second. The Ponies have a victory over a ranked team, topping No. 15-2A Lakeville South 5-3 on Dec. 1. Stillwater's next six games are against unranked opponents, so the Ponies control their own destiny in the rankings over the next few weeks.

The rest of the top 5 remains the same as last week: No. 3 Grand Rapids, No. 4 Elk River (with a first-place vote) and No. 5 Holy Family Catholic.
