Bram Scheerer and Jett Jungels each finished with a goal and an assist as Edina rolled past Burnsville 4-1 Thursday night in Schwan Cup Gold Division quarterfinal action at Ridder Arena.

Edina controlled play and the puck throughout most of three periods. The Hornets routinely dumped the puck deep and chased it with an aggressive forecheck that consistently gave Burnsville fits, a cycle that helped spark the win.

It was a strong, all-around effort for Edina (6-3), which prides itself on puck possession.

“We played well in spurts and made some good plays when we needed to,” Edina coach Curt Giles said. “We want to possess the puck as much as possible. It’s difficult enough to get the puck in the first place, you don’t want to give it up so easily. Puck possession is the key to everything.”

After a scoreless first period, the Hornets erupted for four goals in the second to effectively seize the momentum for good.

Scheerer scored the first goal a little more than three minutes into the second, and it lit the spark for Edina, ranked No. 7 in the Class 2A coaches' poll.

“We were able to get the puck deep, and that’s what got us going,” Scheerer said. “We were able to work well as a team possessing the puck in the offensive zone.”

Later in the period, Jett Jungels scored, followed by goals from Lewis Crosby and Mason Nevers to help the Hornets blow the lid off the game. Scheerer and Jungels combined for four points on the top line to help lead the offensive charge.

“I was just trying to put the puck on net as much as I could,” Scheerer said. “Sometimes when you make that extra move, the (opportunity) can go away.”

After Thursday night’s performance, Scheerer’s goal total hit six for the season. That’s one off the pace for team lead -- which is held by Jungels and Sam Walker.

“Bram is a big, strong kid who handles the puck well and shoots well,” Giles said. “Those are very nice attributes to have in a hockey player, and he played very well tonight.”

Edina advances to face Eden Prairie in semifinal action Friday night at Ridder Arena. The Hornets, who fell hard to the Eagles in a 6-1 loss on the final night of the Edina Holiday Classic two weeks ago, are looking forward to another shot at their Lake Conference rival.

“I’m super excited for tomorrow,” Scheerer said. “Last time we played them, we definitely did not have our 'A' game. This time, we will be ready to go.”

Roman Ahcan scored early in the third period for Burnsville (3-4-1), which recorded its first lost in its last four games.
