With New Year’s Day in the rearview mirror, high school hockey programs can shift their focus to mid-January and the run-up to the section tournaments.

Plenty of eyes will be on league title races, some of which have already taken shape.

In Lakeville, it’s North against South as the Panthers look to make it eight straight victories against the crosstown rival Cougars in a very important game in the South Suburban Conference, and one that could affect Class 2A, Section 1 seeding.

The same can be said for Stillwater traveling to White Bear Lake in a showdown sure to make a splash in the Suburban East Conference, as well as Class 2A, Section 4 seeding. In the north metro, Centennial and Elk River meet for Round 2 in a top Northwest Suburban Conference clash, and in the west, Delano and Holy Family Catholic battle for control of the Wright County Conference.

In the Independent Metro Athletic Conference, Minnehaha Academy and Breck square off, and Eden Prairie and Edina both step out of the grind of the Lake Conference to play other top opponents. The Eagles travel to Duluth East while the Hornets head to Fogerty Arena to take on Blaine.

Eden Prairie’s trip north is one of three key games this week in the northland, where Hermantown hosts Grand Rapids and Roseau faces Warroad in a rivalry dating back more than 70 years.

Whenever the Rams and the Warriors meet, it’s a cultural event and their matchup Thursday is an easy choice for our Top Game of the Week.
