Osseo jumped to a 1-0 lead in Friday's showdown with Northwest Suburban Conference rival and seventh-ranked Maple Grove on Tyler Sims's shorthanded goal in the first period.

The Orioles could not match the Crimson's depth. Osseo's potent top line of Tim Bonner, Casey Cardille and Tyler Dahlberg came away scoreless.

Meanwhile, Maple Grove – featuring eight players who have scored anywhere from three to five goals – got goals from Tyler Dunagan and Dylan Steman to build a one-goal lead after two periods and surged to a 4-2 victory at Osseo's Dick Vraa Memorial Arena.

Steman, considered by Maple Grove coach Gary Stefano to be the "hardest-working player" in a Crimson uniform, assisted on Dunagan's goal at 12:36 of the first period. Steman added a goal of his own just 41 seconds into the second period.

Maple Grove scored twice early in the third period to take control of the game. Alex Mason's power-play goal at 1:21 came moments after officials waved off an apparent goal. And Spencer Bell's goal about three minutes later gave the Crimson a 4-1 lead.

Both teams also missed on good scoring chances. Maple Grove shooters found the crossbar twice while Osseo's Bonner line controlled the puck but could not get in past Crimson goaltender Ryan Coyne. And when Bonner's line struggles, it is bad news for Osseo. His line has tallied 40 of the Orioles 57 goals this season.

Both teams entered Friday's game on a winning streak, part of the reason the arena was packed with more fans than Osseo activities director Ray Kirsch can recall seeing. Maple Grove (9-3-1) won its fourth consecutive game, a run kick-started by an upset of then-No. 1 Wayzata.

Meanwhile, Osseo (9-5) saw its four-game winning streak end. The Orioles had allowed a combined three goals in their past four games.
