Victoria-based team has won nine consecutive games after Thursday’s 3-0 victory at Lakeville North.

How good has January been for Holy Family Catholic boys’ hockey?

After a 7-1 season start (including a season-opening 2-1 victory over Edina), the Fire had a tough stretch in the St. Louis Park holiday tournament, going 0-2-1. Since then, however, the Victoria-based team has won nine consecutive games after Thursday’s 3-0 victory at Lakeville North. A 1-1 tie against North on Dec. 30 was Holy Family’s last non-victory before the streak.

A big reason for the success of the Fire — moving up to No. 7 in the most recent Let’s Play Hockey Class 2A rankings — has been its offensive balance. Junior Ben Almquist, who verbally committed to Wisconsin in early January, leads the team in scoring with 39 points. Ten other players have reached double figures in points scored.

Good goaltending is essential to success, and Holy Family has gotten that from 6-3 junior Jared Moe, who was 15-3-1 with a .916 save percentage and three shutouts before the Lakeville North game.

Holy Family looks prepared for a strong run at Eden Prairie for the Class 2A, Section 2 championship.

Adams honored

Minneapolis North football coach Charles “OA” Adams III spent the weekend at the Pro Bowl in Orlando, Fla., as an honored guest of the NFL. Adams was one of 33 coaches nominated for the Don Shula Coach of the Year Award. He was the Minnesota Vikings’ representative.

Randy Allen of Highland Park, Texas, won the award.

Fine fencer

Wayzata junior fencer Graham Maas led the Minnesota Sword Club to a victory over highly regarded Holy Family in a dual meet Jan. 19. Two days later, he won all of his matches en route to the individual epee championship at the Southwest Christian Invitational. Maas is considered one of the state’s top junior pentathletes.
