Q&A with Zach Schroeder of St. Thomas Academy

Senior forward's family name has deep hockey history

The Schroeder name has been synonymous with St. Thomas Academy hockey the past decade.

Jordan Schroeder was a St. Thomas Academy in 2005 and 2006 and helped lead the Cadets to the State Tournament in both years - winning the Class 1A title in 2006.

Zach, Jordan's younger brother, is currently finishing his senior season at the school after spending the last four years as a part of the Cadets' varsity hockey team. Zach was a member of the Cadets' 2008 Class 1A Championship team and also played in the Upper Midwest High School Elite Hockey League. He also plays baseball in the spring.

A: 'The Prayer' by Kid Cudi, 'Remember the Name' by Fort Minor, 'Sleepyhead' by Passion Pit.

Q: Three words your friends or teammates might use to describe you?
A:
Leader, devoted and caring.

Q: Favorite pregame meal?
A: Team pasta parties or a light meal.

Q: What is your most memorable moment as a high school athlete?
A: Winning the Class 1A state hockey tournament as a freshman in 2008.

Q: What are your goals for the 2010-11 school year as an athlete?
A:
To win the state championship this season, and to be a good leader for my team.

Q: At your first varsity practice, you felt …
A: Small, going up against six senior defensemen who were big and weighed around 200 pounds.

Q: How do you balance school and sports during the year?
A: Good time management.

Q: Your favorite college or pro sports team and why?
A: The Vancouver Canucks, because they drafted my brother Jordan in the first round.

Q: What is the best sports advice you ever received?
A: Leave everything out on the ice. Play your game.

Credentials: Schroeder was a member of the St. Thomas Academy team that won the 2008 Class 1A State Championship. He also played on Team Southeast last fall in the Upper Midwest High School Elite Hockey League and tallied 25 points (12 goals, 13 assists) in 23 games. Schroeder has 28 points (11 goals, 17 assists) through 16 games for the 2010 St. Thomas Academy Cadets as of Jan. 29, and is currently second in team scoring - one point behind leader A.J. Reid.
