David La Vaque has covered all but one state hockey tournament game since 2009 and has worked as a Star Tribune high school sports reporter since 2004. His favorite tournament experiences include cheering for alma mater St. Paul Johnson in 1991 and staying for most of the Apple Valley/Duluth East marathon semifinal game in 1996. Loren Nelson has covered every state tournament since 2009 as the national media editor for Sport Ngin. He attended many, many other Tourney games as a high schooler from the far northern reaches of Minnesota making the annual pilgrimage south to the old St. Paul Civic Center in the 1980s.

Day 1 All-Tourney Team

Two-man Advantage presents the first installment of its daily 2017 All-Tournament Team selections.

FORWARDS

Nick Zwack

Monticello/Annandale/Maple Lake | Senior

With a name like Zwack, you've got to be good, right? Zwack scored twice and chased down a Delano player to negate a potential breakaway as the Moose stunned Delano. Two-Man loves two-way players.

Nicholas Kvernmo

Northfield | Senior

Did you see him hoist that bazooka onto his shoulder and fire multiple blasts into the crowd? All in good fun, of course. Kvernmo scored twice, the second into an empty net, and left a lasting impression with his goal celebrations (the kids call them cellys).

Dylan Kolquist

Hermantown | Senior

Two-Man isn’t big on rules, but scoring anyone scoring an overtime goal automatically gains entry on this team. He also had an assist and healthy plus-2 plus/minus rating.

Reagan Garden

St. Cloud Cathedral | Senior

Scored twice, but really impressed with his flowing locks. A lock for the all-hair team (reports are he’s been growing his mane for 18 months).

DEFENSEMEN

Tyler Reisdorfer

Luverne | Junior

Twice stepped in front of errant Hermantown clearing passes and converted them into goals. Also shared the team lead with three blocked shots.

GOALTENDERS

Kaden Ericson

Luverne | Junior

Losing teams typically don’t land a player on our daily all-tourney teams, much less two. But such was the performance by the Cardinals as they nearly pulled off one of the greatest upsets in tourney history. Ericson’s 49-save performance was nothing short of superb.

Tyler Klatt

Monticello/Annandale/Maple Lake | Junior

Holding Delano’s high-powered offense, led by one of the state’s great all-time scorers in Ben Meyers, requires nerves of steel and the reflexes of a ninja. And a lot of saves. Klatt finished with 33 of them.
