Warriors' Austin Strieff nets game-winning power-play goal. Watch the replay

A rivalry that dates back to the 1940's was renewed as the Warroad Warriors and Roseau Rams faced off for another time Tuesday night at the Roseau Memorial Coliseum.  The Warroad Warriors won a stunning 5-4 game in overtime that had something for everyone and more.

Austin Strieff scored the game winning goal in at 4:43 of overtime on a five on three power play to lift his team past the Rams.  The win was the Warriors second of the season against Roseau.  Strieff's goal came after Roseau center Shane Omdahl was whistled for a cross checking penalty while his team was killing a penalty in overtime.   Omdahl's penalty came behind the play and it was the Warriors that were opportunistic in putting the game away.

"It's unfortunate the game ended that way," Warriors coach Albert Hasbargen said.  "But, on the same token you have to be able to defend that.  We had a couple of five on threes against us when we played Roseau at home.  We were able to get through that and it was a huge opportunity for us."

The Warrior power play had been clicking at just 11% entering the game and according to Hasbargen, that was what they needed.  "Their penalty kill is very aggressive and you have to be careful on that.  Two of their best penalty killers went to he box so that helps too."

After the game was tied at one after two periods, the two teams erupted for 6 third period goals including a thrilling game tying goal by Roseau with :40 remaining in the third period.  Mike Johnson blasted a rebound past Warrior goalie Andy Foster from the low slot with the extra attacker on the ice to force the extra session.

Johnson's game tying goal came just 1:22 after Nick Stoskopf had given his team the lead on the back end of the power play as he blasted the puck through the five hole of Roseau goalie Mike Tangen from the slot area as he trailed on a rush.  Not a soul in the building believed the game was over and it wasn't.

The Warrior power play was 3-5 on the game and they needed it.  The Rams were equally efficient with the power play as they converted on two of three power play opportunities.  As the game notched up with intensity, the special teams opportunities presented themselves.

The game did have its special teams moments in the ladder stages of the second period, through the third, and of course in overtime.  Some of that was a result of a game that picked up in pace and intensity throughout the contest.   Roseau and Warroad went to the net and were battling hard and that led to some infractions.  The Rams took over the game in the second period.  They outshot the Warriors 15-5 in the third period and 35-18 for the game.

Omdahl came up big for the Rams with a goal and two assists and Travis Connell was a benefactor from Omdahl's play as he chipped in two goals and an assist.  Stoskopf had a three point night of his own with two goals and an assist while Carson Gray notched three assists.

For Gray none of his assists were more important than his third, which was a shot that was deflected off the draw to star the two man advantage.  His partially blocked shot landed in Strieff's lap who put away the game winner.
