The National Federation of High Schools’ wrestling rules committee approved the use of two-piece alternate uniforms consisting of compression shorts developed specifically for wrestling and a tight-fitting compression T-shirt.

The move was made in response to growing dissatisfaction with the singlet, wrestling’s traditional one-piece uniform that resembles a leotard.

“I like the change to allow a two-piece uniform,” St. Michael-Albertville coach Dan Lefebvre said.

Lefebvre said he doesn’t know how his high school wrestlers will respond, but he’s already anticipating a switch to the two-piece uniform for middle school-age wrestlers.

Mafe has hops

The Gophers landed a talented all-around athlete when they signed Hopkins linebacker Boye Mafe in February. The 6-4, 230-pound Mafe recently finished second in the high jump at the Hamline Elite Meet with a leap of 6-5. Mafe’s best jump this season is 6-6.

Storming

Junior Maddie Schwartz was expected to be the Chanhassen softball team’s No. 3 starter, but Schwartz was all but untouchable in her first three starts.

She pitched three shutouts, gave up only five hits and one walk and struck out 27 batters. She threw a no-hitter in a 5-0 victory over Buffalo in a rematch of the 2016 Class 4A championship game.
