Minnetonka senior Ben Livorsi had popped up two routine flies before his third plate appearance in the bottom of the sixth inning with the game tied 3-3.

The St. Louis commit was only worried about getting on base and keeping the lineup moving.

His bat had other plans as he belted a shot over the center field wall for a game-clinching solo home run in the Skippers' 4-3 win over Wayzata Saturday night at Minnetonka High School.

The win completes a regular season sweep over the defending Lake Conference champions and keeps the Skippers, ranked third in the Class 4A coaches’ poll, in the hunt.

“I saw the center fielder keep going back, back, back,” Livorsi said of his home run. “Then I saw it disappear over the fence and that was it.”

Minnetonka (13-4, 5-2) was a team highly-ranked last season, but dropped its first two games of the postseason. For Livorsi and 15 other Minnetonka seniors, this spring is a final chance at clinching a league crown and making a run for a state title.

“Hopefully we can run the table here and get that No. 1 seed in our section and win the Lake Conference [title],” Livorsi said.

Wayzata (13-4, 6-2), the defending Class 4A champion, didn’t play an entirely perfect game, leaving Skippers coach Paul Twenge wanting a rematch on the state tournament stage.

“I hope we keep playing,” Twenge said. “That’s a good team over there. They have a lot of fight. Hopefully we can say the same thing and meet them again at the state tournament. That’d be beautiful.”

First Report

Ben Livorsi’s solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning gave Minnetonka its first and only lead in a 4-3 victory over defending Lake Conference champion Wayzata on Friday night at Minnetonka High School.

Ranked third in the Class 4A coaches’ poll, the Skippers (13-4, 5-2) plated a run in each of its final three innings to clinch the win and remain in the hunt for the league title behind frontrunner, Wayzata (13-4, 6-2).

Jimmy Ramsey drove in Aaron Brush twice, once in the first and again in the fifth, to tie the game at 3-3.

Will Oberg gave up four runs and 10 hits while striking out three in his first loss of the season for the No. 2-4A Trojans. Jack Berset allowed a single hit and struck out two batters to earn the win in relief for Nate Shoemaker. Ramsey clinched the save for Minnetonka.
