Hill-Murray wins showdown

HILL-MURRAY 4, ST. THOMAS ACADEMY 2: The Pioneers beat the Cadets in Saturday’s showdown of the top-ranked boys’ hockey teams in each class before a standing-room-only crowd at St. Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights. The Pioneers’ J.D. Cotroneo scored on a shot that deflected off a Cadets defenseman at 11:32 of the third period in a game where strong efforts by both teams kept emotions and leads bouncing around. Ryan Holler added an empty-net goal with 7 seconds left. Hill-Murray (21-3-1 in Class 2A) led 1-0 after the first period then fell behind as St. Thomas (19-6-0 Class 1A) scored twice in the second period on goals from Andrew Commers and Michael Ferreira. Hill-Murray tied the score 2-2 later in the period with Jake Guentzel’s goal.

EDEN PRAIRIE 5, EDINA 4: Luc Gerdes scored his second goal of the night unassisted with 1 minute, 14 seconds remaining, giving the Eagles a victory over the Hornets in a Lake matchup. Edina’s Ben Walker scored his second goal of the second period at the 15:49 mark, tying it 4-4. Steven Fogarty also scored twice for the Hornets.

CHANHASSEN 3, NORTH METRO 2 (OT): Junior forward Connor Kelly scored his second goal with 3 minutes, 45 seconds left in overtime, giving the Storm the nonconference victory. He scored a power-play goal with 3 minutes, 8 seconds remaining, tying it 2-2. North Metro scored both of its goals in the third period.

BRECK 5, BLAKE 1: Five players scored for the Mustangs, who got five unanswered goals and rolled in a battle of top-10 Class 1A teams in the Tri-Metro Conference. Senior forward Max Oppenheimer and eighth-grade defenseman Keegan Iverson each had a goal and an assist for the Mustangs, and sophomore Matt Colford added two assists. Blake junior forward Zach Doerring started the scoring with an unassisted goal 5 minutes, 14 seconds into the game.

PROVIDENCE ACADEMY 5, MINNEHAHA ACADEMY 4 (OT): Lions senior defenseman Patrick Pulles scored with 1 minute, 52 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime, and junior defenseman Marshall Klitzke scored 3 minutes, 49 seconds into the extra session to beat Minnehaha Academy. The pair finished with three points apiece, with two goals and an assist for Klitzke and a goal and two assists for Pulles. Minnehaha Academy scored all four of its goals in the second period, led by a hat trick from junior defender Michael Fabie.

COOPER 4, ST. LOUIS PARK 3: Senior forward Tim Roberg had a hat trick for the Hawks, his third of the season, in a victory over the Orioles in a North Suburban matchup.

WAYZATA 9, HOPKINS 3: Eight players scored goals for the Class 2A, No. 3-ranked Trojans as they eased past the Royals in Lake Conference play. Senior forward Tony Cameranesi led Wayzata with four points from a goal and three assists. Senior Paul Voelker (two goals and an assist) and junior Mario Lucia (one goal and two assists) had three points apiece.

ELK RIVER 2, ANDOVER 0: Elks junior goalie Anders Franke came up with his third shutout of the season, and first since Jan. 15, stopping all 13 shots he faced against the Huskies. Elks junior forward Ryan Heid opened the scoring with a short-handed goal in the second period before senior Nash Bleyhl sealed it with a goal in the third.

EASTVIEW 6, PRIOR LAKE 6 (OT): Lightning junior forward Scott Nelson scored a season-high six points (a hat trick and three assists) in what turned out to be an entertaining South Suburban game. Prior Lake senior Matt Anderson scored a hat trick of his own, to go along with an assist. Teammate senior Ryan Dorn finished with four assists, giving him seven in the past two games.

BURNSVILLE 4, BLOOMINGTON KENNEDY 0: Burnsville’s strong defense held the Eagles to 19 shots, and senior goalie Neal Pester stopped them all, giving him his first victory and shutout of the season. The Blaze were led offensively by junior forward Cory Chapman, who had two goals and an assist.

MINNEAPOLIS 8, REDWOOD VALLEY 2: Twin brothers Alec and Jack Kelly scored five points between them to help the Novas cruise past Redwood Valley in a nonconference matchup. Alec scored two goals and Jack a goal and two assists. Junior forward Newton Fuller delivered three assists for the third time in four games for Minneapolis.

LAKEVILLE NORTH 5, ROSEMOUNT 0: Junior goalie Charlie Lindgren made 30 stops and blanked the Irish for his second shutout of the season. Junior forward Blake Winiecki, North’s leading scorer, led the team with two goals and one assist, bringing his season total to 21 in each category.

RICHFIELD 8, NORTH BRANCH 4: Junior forwards Mick Dhein and Tyler Martinez each had hat tricks for Richfield as the Spartans doubled up North Branch. Senior defenseman Patrick Peterson added four assists for Richfield, the second time this season he’s hit that mark.
