His coaching career — the last five years as the Eagles' head coach — spans the program's powerhouse years.

Apple Valley wrestling coach Dalen Wasmund is exiting as a champion.

Wasmund is retiring as the Eagles’ mentor after guiding the state powerhouse to their 12th consecutive Class 3A team state championship, the school announced Thursday. Wasmund will continue as a mathematics teacher in the school district.

His first year teaching in the school district correlates with Apple Valley’s 35 consecutive appearances in the state tournament. It won 25 state championships in that span.

Wasmund was an assistant coach at Apple Valley beginning in 1982. He left for a stint in the 1990s to coach at Eagan before returning to the Eagles as an assistant. He became the head coach before the 2012-13 season after the resignation of longtime coach Jim Jackson, who has since returned to coach at Shakopee.

Wasmund, a former Gopher All-American, was a two-time individual state champion himself in high school at Worthington, where he compiled a career record of 117-4.
