If the Mustangs find themselves in overtime again in the playoffs, it would seem there is a clear favorite to take the puck.

Two days ago, David Zosel’s scored the game-winner in overtime as Breck bested Delano in the second round of the sectionals. Thursday night, the Mustangs stormed back from a two-goal deficit, scoring three in the third period, and Zosel again completed the comeback and pushed his team to another dramatic 4-3 victory in the sectional final at Parade Ice Arena.

As with Orono’s last game — when they found some last-minute heroics of their own, scoring two in the last two minutes — the Spartans got on the board first. But in the third period the Mustangs proved that they would not go down so easily.

After Ross Luedtke — who recorded his second consecutive hat trick — scored a goal each in the first and second periods, Breck came out with  renewed energy in the third. Eighth grader Keegan Iverson snuck one past Spartan goalie Matt Peterson five minutes in. Three minutes later, Luedte struck again with what looked to be the insurance goal, taking about the fifth team whack at the puck and flipping it over the pile of bodies, and as he skated down the ice, fist raised, a flurry of colorful hats rained down on the ice from the Orono student section.

But Breck was not done. With under three minutes remaining, Wesley Iverson took an assist from his brother Keegan into the net. Then, with a minute and six seconds left on the clock, Matt Colford shot the equalizer, sending the Breck stands into a frenzy and the game into overtime.

But one would not be enough. In the first overtime, each team got plenty of scary chances, but Peterson and Breck goalie Jack Kenney stopped each one.

Just a minute into the second OT, Zosel took a page from the last game, scoring the winner.
