In a Metro West district showdown between Edina and Wayzata, it was host Edina that came out with a dominating 29-0 win Friday night.

While Edina, which is ranked No. 3 in the Class 6A Associated Press poll, was unquestionably the better team on Friday, it didn’t dominate for all 48 minutes of the game. The Hornets had three straight drives end in turnovers in the first quarter, two fumbles, and an interception by Jacob Beeninga. All three turnovers set up Wayzata in Edina territory, but the Hornet defense didn’t break at all, forcing two turnovers on downs and a missed field goal.

Edina coach Derrin Lamker was brutally honest about his team’s performance in the first quarter.

“We tried to give them the game at the start,” he said. “Luckily our defense dug us out of it, and, wow, were they lights out tonight.”

The deadlock was broken in the middle of the second quarter when Edina quarterback Ryan Meyer ran in a 1-yard bootleg. The touchdown came after a near Edina fumble that would’ve been six for Wayzata, as Beeninga was free for the end zone after scooping the ball up, but the referees ruled the runner was down by contact. From there on out, Edina continued to take advantage of Wayzata after turnovers, something the Trojans failed to do early.

Wayzata (1-2, 0-2) coach Lambert Brown stated the lack of offensive execution after the Edina mistakes was the difference in the game.

“We did just enough to give them points, as they did for us. The difference is they capitalized on it—we didn’t,” he said.

After the Hornets scored, they took over the game. Meyer threw a 10-yard touchdown to Anders Nelson before the end of the half to give the Hornets a 14-0 lead.

Meyer had an impressive day leading the offense, throwing for 91 yards, two touchdowns and adding one on the ground as well.

It was an all-around team effort, with the defense shutting down the Trojan offense, letting the Hornet offense get a short field most of the time. While the whole team played well, it was hard to not focus on the play of Luke Glenna, who completely stole the show for the Hornets (3-0, 1-0).

He dominated both sides of the ball, racking up three interceptions, one going back for a touchdown, while also getting three receptions for 23 yards and a touchdown.

Glenna said his interceptions were aided by his front seven getting consistent pressure throughout the game.

“I have confidence in my guys up front. We get pressure on the quarterback, they have to throw it up; and I’ve played receiver my whole life too, so I’m a receiver out there on defense coming up to get the ball,” he said about his three picks.

When specifically talking about his pick six, which came on Wayzata’s first drive of the second half, he said he saw on film that Billy Riviere, Wayzata’s tight end, likes to run over the middle of the field, so he jumped the route once he knew it was coming.

When asked if this was the best game of his life, Glenna had a simple answer: “It has to be.”

First Report

Edina hosted Wayzata Friday night looking to solidify its ranking in the Metro West district. That’s exactly what the Hornets did, stifling the Trojans' offense and cruising to a 29-0 victory.

While the score indicates that the game came easy for Edina, it was a struggle early. The Hornets, who are ranked No. 3 in the Class 6A Associated Press poll, had three straight drives end in turnovers in the first quarter, giving Wayzata good field possession on each of them.

The Hornets fumbled twice, and Jacob Beeninga had an interception for the Trojans. However, the Hornet defense stood tall, including forcing two turnovers on downs. The other time, the Trojans failed to convert a field goal attempt.

That was enough of a spark to finally get the offense going, and the Hornets took care of the game from there. Edina (3-0, 1-0) scored two touchdowns in the first half, a 1-yard run by Ryan Meyer, and a 10-yard pass from Meyer to Anders Nelson.

All the scoring in the second half came from Luke Glenna. He ended Wayzata’s first drive of the half, returning an interception for a touchdown to give Edina a commanding lead. He then caught a 17-yard pass from Meyer in the fourth quarter to officially put the nail in Wayzata’s (1-2, 0-2) coffin.
