With the win, the Trojans gained sole control of the Lake Conference.

Wayzata sophomore forward and leading scorer Patrick Weah prides himself on what he considers to be a high “soccer IQ.”

Late in the second half Saturday afternoon in sweltering heat and his team locked into a scoreless stalemate with Lake Conference rival Edina, Weah showed exactly what that meant.

Weah capitalized on a moment of confusion following an Edina foul and a set piece ball, sweeping in from the left of teammate Stuart Sain as Sain was lining up his free kick and everyone in the box was still taking inventory of their surroundings.

The quick-kick ball sailed into the top right corner of the goal, beyond the reach of a stunned Edina goalkeeper. It was the first goal of the game and it lifted the Trojans onward to a 2-0 victory.

“I’ve seen it many, many professional soccer players do this before,” he said. “It’s not the first time I’ve tried it in a game, but it was the first time I was successful.”

Once Wayzata, ranked No. 2 in the Minnesota High School Soccer Coaches’ Association Class 2A poll, held the lead, No. 3-2A Edina grew frustrated and struggled to stem the change in momentum. That frustration soon proved crippling and fatal for the third-ranked Hornets (7-1-2, 2-1-2), who dropped their first match of the season.

"They really let it bother them," Weah said of Edina's reaction to the first score. "From there, it seemed like they were blaming me, and blaming the referees...they got upset and then everything started going wrong for their side."

Perhaps with more time on the attack up to that point, Edina spun its wheels while Wayzata thrived with the change in momentum.

Shortly after Weah’s score, his team-best 11th goal of the season, the Trojans added another score. Following a flurry near the right edge of the inner box, Wayzata’s Jack Sonstegard fired away with a trio of close-range shots, the third of which converted at 29:53 as Wayzata pulled away and into the driver’s seat atop the conference.

“I’m very proud of this team and how we executed our adjustments,” Wayzata coach Dominic Duenas said. “But, this is just another in a long line of tough matches in our conference. We’re happy with this, but we’re going to take a deep breath, and then get ready for Hopkins on Tuesday.”

Wayzata broke loose with two second-half goals to top visiting Edina 2-0 Saturday afternoon in Lake Conference action.

Outplayed for much of the first half, Wayzata, ranked No. 2 in the Minnesota High School Soccer Coaches’ Association Class 2A poll, flipped a switch in the second half. Once the Trojans held the lead, No. 3-2A Edina grew frustrated and struggled to stem the change in momentum.

Wayzata’s first goal came amid controversy following a foul call near the edge of the Hornets’ box. As junior midfielder Stuart Sain appeared to be lining up for the set kick, teammate Patrick Weah quickly slipped in from the side and launched an unexpected shot into the far top corner.

Weah’s ninth goal of the season pushed the Trojans (10-0-2, 3-0-2) ahead, stunning the Hornets (7-1-2, 2-1-2) who never really recovered.

In goal for Wayzata, Daniel Welshons earned the shutout, stopping seven shots. His counterpart, Edina's Ethan Ruwe, finished with one save.
