Following a similar script from the first meeting between these rivals less than three weeks prior, Wayzata and Edina played to a 1-1 draw Saturday afternoon at Wayzata High School, leaving control of the Lake Conference still very much open.

The clash between the pair of top five-ranked powers lived up to its promise in a match were nearly every stride and dribble was hotly contested on an unseasonably warm and humid autumn day where temperatures pushed 90 degrees.

“This is a section-style game, and hopefully by the time sections arrive, we will be battled tested because of games like this,” Edina coach Katie Aafedt said. “In this conference, every game is tough, and it prepares us well for the playoffs.”

Wayzata, ranked No. 1 in Class 2A according to the Minnesota State High School Soccer Coaches’ Association poll, struck first when senior captain Alexis Hayden scored off a set kick with 8:01 left in the opening half to push the Trojans (9-0-2, 3-0-2) out front early.

Fighting from behind and on its heels early in the second half, No. 4-2A Edina (7-1-3, 3-0-2) leveled the score at 1-1 with 11:22 to go when Eva Hendrickson fired home a mid-range shot from the left of the Trojans’ goal that found the back of the net.

That was the extent of the offense, as both worked to lock down the passing lanes and limit space. One on one battles took over, and things grinded forwards.

“You always want to have games like this,” Wayzata coach Tony Peszneker said. “It was hard-fought, and you can’t make mistakes without expecting (your opponent) to capitalize on it. It’s good to have a good mix of these, but I wouldn’t want to play 16 games like this because it takes a lot out of you.”

For Edina, this draw feels almost like a win. An experience they will pocket and build on.

“Tying Wayzata at Wayzata, I’ll take it any day of the week,” Aafedt said. “This is a very tough place to play against a very talented team.”
