Giving Edina a two-man power play advantage is akin to tossing raw fish to a grizzly bear.

The carnage is unavoidable. The outcome? Inevitable.

“The thing is we took a couple of undisciplined penalties,” Maple Grove coach Todd Bergland said after his Crimson lost 6-2 to the Hornets, who are ranked No. 1 in the Class 2A coaches' poll, on Saturday in the championship game of the Turkey Trot Hockey Tournament at Plymouth Ice Center. “Give up a 5-on-3 against this team, that can move puck like that, you are going to get beat up pretty quick.”

Maple Grove (0-1-1) was within 3-2 of the Hornets, (2-0-0) in the third period, then the Crimson were called for a penalty. Then another.

Then, well, you can guess what happened next.

Operating with all that open ice, Edina’s forwards were surgical as they knifed through the Crimson defense and unloaded shots on goal. Ethan Haider, Maple Grove’s supremely talented sophomore goaltender, made stop after stop after stop. But he couldn’t stop Jett Jungels from whipping a puck into an open net after taking a feed through the crease from Mason Nevers.

Jungels scored later in the third period, part of a three-goal flurry that came in a span of 2 minutes, 37 seconds and put the game out of reach.

Like many of his fellow Hornets forwards, Jungels was a standout in the Upper Midwest High School Elite League this fall. He is blessed with high-end speed, great ice awareness and a wicked shot, among other skills.

“He doesn’t look that big, but he’s surprisingly strong on the puck,” Edina coach Curt Giles said about Jungels. “And he can finish.”

Jungels and Evan Schoemaker each scored twice against Maple Grove. On Friday, in a tournament-opening 7-0 victory over Holy Family Catholic, Lewis Crosby had four goals. With this Edina team, trying to shut down a certain player or single line is as futile as toting an umbrella in a hurricane.

“We played bodies,” Jungels said. “We rolled all four lines, we utilized everyone, everyone played as a team, no one was selfish.”

Haider, another top player in the Elite League this fall, gave Maple Grove a chance at the upset victory through two periods and part of third on his way to a 36-save performance.

“He was just unreal,” Jungels said. “Very hard to score against.”

Bergland liked where No. 15-2A Maple Grove stood entering the third.

“We were right where we wanted to be with them,” Bergland said. “Given the goaltender that we have, we can do anything, really.”

First Report

Junior forward Jett Jungels scored twice in the third period as Edina, ranked No. 1 in Class 2A in the state coaches’ preseason poll, broke open a tight game with three unanswered goals and cruised to a 6-2 victory over Maple Grove on Saturday in the championship game of the CCX Media Turkey Trot Hockey Tournament at Plymouth Ice Center.

Jungels scored on a 5-on-3 power play 3:16 into the third to put the Hornets (2-0-0) ahead 4-2. Evan Shoemaker scored less than two minutes later to put Edina ahead 5-2, and Jungels capped the goal-scoring flurry 43 seconds later with his second goal.

Matt Jaglo’s goal with 1:41 left in the third, the result of a brilliant rush down the left boards and hard drive to the Edina net, pulled the Crimson (1-0-1) to within 3-2.

Shoemaker also had a pair of goals for the Hornets, who cruised past Holy Family Catholic 7-0 in Friday’s tournament opener. Liam Malmquist and Demetrios Koumontzis also scored for Edina. Senior goaltender Garrett Mackay finished with 11 saves.

Maple Grove sophomore goaltender Ethan Haider kept the No. 15-2A Crimson within striking distance for much of the game with his brilliant play. He stopped 36 shots.

Tyler Kostelecky scored the other Maple Grove goal.
