Former standout Stars player named associate head coach

Billy Hengen, a former standout Academy of Holy Angels player, will serve as an associate head coach for the Stars during the 2011-12 season.

This will be Hengen’s second stint on the Holy Angels’ staff under head coach Greg Trebil. Hengen was an assistant coach for the Stars for three seasons from 2006-2009.

Trebil learned he has lung cancer before last season, and he had one lung removed. Trebil, who has guided Holy Angels to two state Class 2A titles, remained a fixture behind the Stars' bench as they went 16-9-1. Holy Angels lost to Prior Lake in the Section 2AA quarterfinals.

Hengen was an assistant coach at Providence Academy last season. He also coached the Blake B Bantams to a state championship in 2007.

Hengen scored a Stars career record 102 goals and added 118 assists at Holy Angels. He played two seasons for the Lincoln Stars of the United States Hockey League. He was a top scorer at St. Cloud State University from 2002 to 2006.

“I had the privilege of playing for Greg Trebil in high school and helping  Holy Angels to its first state tournament appearance,” Hengen said in a Holy Angels media release. “Coach Trebil gave me my first coaching job as an assistant after college, and I had the opportunity to learn from him and the coaching staff for three years. Now, I look forward to the opportunity to take on a larger role as an associate head coach and to add to the program as much as possible.”

Hengen is CEO and co-founder of Splayback.com, a sports video highlight film and fundraising company.
