Twice is nice for Trojans
Wayzata shuts out Moorhead for second time in 10 days.
Playing the same team twice within a short span is a challenge.
Yet that’s just what the No. 7AA Wayzata Trojans accomplished after beating Moorhead 3-0 Saturday night, Jan. 9 at the Moorhead Sports Center. The Trojans (9-2-1) had shut out the Spuds (5-5-2) just 10 days earlier in the consolation finals of the St. Louis Park Holiday Classic.
“We addressed that before the game,” Wayzata coach Carl Davis said. “We talked about how we were approaching the game mentally and how hard it is to beat anybody within a (short) time.
“I thought our kids really responded well.”
“They were ready to go right from the drop of the puck, ready to show they were a good team,” Trojans’ junior center Tony Cameranesi said. “It was back-and-forth the whole game.”
But just after the Spuds had killed off both a 5-on-3 and 5-on-4 penalty in the final minute of the first period, Wayzata’s Scott Holm knocked in an even strength goal with five seconds remaining to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.
“We kind of felt like we got rewarded for some pretty good effort,” Davis said. “It was a huge momentum (swing). Any time you score in the last minute of the period, you establish momentum for your team.”
Moorhead coach Dave Morinville agreed. “That was a deflator.”
“If we had a bounce our way, that may have given us momentum,” Morinville said.
Instead, Wayzata took control of the game with a short-handed rush by Cameranesi. He took a short pass from linemate Mario Lucia in the Spuds’ zone, outraced the Moorhead defense and slid a short-hander past netminder Michael Bitzer to make it 2-0.
“He never takes a shift off. He just works so hard, both with and without the puck,” Davis said of his junior, who broke a nine-game goalless skid with the tally.
Lucia added an empty net goal from Cameranesi in the final minute to close out the scoring.
McIntyre made 17 saves to shut out the Spuds for the second time in 10 days, while Bitzer stopped 23 shots for Moorhead.
“They’re a good hockey team,” Morinville shrugged. “What more can you say?”

Three Stars
The junior defenseman was a very steady force for the Trojans, helping them shut out Moorhead for the second time in less than two weeks. Jones also assisted on the first Wayzata goal with just five seconds remaining in the first period.
McIntyre, a junior goaltender, stopped all 17 shots he faced to post his second shut out against Moorhead. He was at his best in the second period with Wayzata clinging to a 1-0 lead. In that frame, he made 11 saves.
The junior center finally broke his 10-game goal-scoring drought with a short-handed rush at the 12:59 mark of the second period that stretched Wayzata's lead to 2-0. A high-intensity, high-effort player, Cameranesi later assisted on Mario Lucia's empty-netter.
