Edina goalie Kobi Boe had a message for Wayzata’s student section, which had heckled senior through three periods and overtime of the Hornets’ matchup with the Trojans in the Turkey Trot championship game Saturday at the Plymouth Ice Center.

Boe popped out of the crease and waved to the rival fans sitting in the stands to his left moments after stopping a shot in the shootout by Wayzata junior forward Luke Paterson.

“They were yelling my name all night, so I just wanted to say thank you for the support,” Boe said.

Edina was especially thankful for Boe’s performance, as he stopped four of the Trojans’ five shots in the shootout to seal the Hornets’ 4-3 victory over.

“It was a pressure situation and Kobi came up big,” Edina coach Curt Giles said. “This is an exciting place to play in with a lot of people watching. It didn’t bother him one bit, and we are very happy with how he played tonight.”

The pressure of being the starting goalie for the two-time defending Class 2A state champions and the current No. 1 team in the coaches preseason poll doesn’t seem to be too much Boe, who has helped the Hornets to a 2-0-0 record this season. He went 2-0 in two starts as a junior and recorded 5-1 wins against White Bear Lake and Holy Angels.

Boe passed the test of facing the Trojans (1-1), one of Edina’s Lake Conference rivals and the third ranked team in Class 2A, in front of a packed house on the road. And he had a chaotic student section screaming at him all night.

Boe had total of 15 saves in regulation and overtime before making his biggest stops in the shootout.

“He was unbelievable,” Edina captain Dylan Malmquist said. “You stop four of five against these guys, in their building with all their fans. That is a pretty huge.”

Wayzata’s Nathan Dingmann scored twice on Boe in the second period, tying the score 2-2. The Trojans’ senior forward had the first attempt in the shootout, where he scored again on Boe.

It would be Wayzata’s final goal of the game as Boe responded with some rock-solid positioning. He challenged the Trojans and cut off shooting angles to stop Wayzata’s final skaters.

Junior forward Max Zimmer fanned on a wrist shot and senior defenseman Alex Stevens missed the net on his attempt after being challenged by Boe.

Peterson tried to deke, but Boe didn’t bite and made an easy save for the victory.

“He basically got us the win tonight,” Malmquist said.

Malmquist did his part to propel Edina.

The senior forward put the puck past Trojans junior goalie Alex Schilling and into the upper right corner of the net using one of his trademark moves: Cut to his left on the forehand to get the goalie moving followed by a quick wrist shot to score.

Malmquist also scored in the shootout, but had to deviate from his preferred approach.

“I usually try a move at practice, but the ice was really choppy from the third period and overtime that I did not want to have the puck bounce on me,” he said. “Going in, I was going to shoot, saw the five-hole open and got it through.”

The last time Wayzata defeated Edina was Feb. 16, 2012. The Hornets are 6-0-1 against the Trojans since then, including victories over their rivals in the last two Turkey Trot championships.

“It is always fun to come into this place, no matter what,” Malmquist said. “It’s a great atmosphere to be in and to come away with two wins is huge for us. We have a lot of great players and have a great goalie to go with it”
