Mahtomedi at Breck
7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 9

This could be a state tournament preview game, as No. 6-1A Mahtomedi (3-0-0) travels across the Twin Cities to take on No. 5-1A Breck (3-2-0) Tuesday night. Both teams were considered the favorites in their respective sections at season’s start and both remain on that track.

The Zephyrs have had an impressive start, edging Class 2A power Cretin-Derham Hall and then rolling past a pair of Class 1A contenders (7-1 over St. Cloud Cathedral and 5-1 over St. Paul Academy, one of Mahtomedi’s chief rivals in Section 4A). Coach Jeff Poeschl has commented on his team’s scoring depth, and that’s revealed itself through three games, as 10 players have tallied goals and 15 have at least one point, led by Sam Krawczyk (1-4-5), Joe Forciea (1-4-5) and Timothy Kuivinen (2-3-5).

Breck has been a bit more up and down, following up victories with losses to Duluth Marshall and East Grand Forks. In five games, the usually high-scoring Mustangs have been held to two goals or fewer three times already. Of course, they’ve also scored six against Delano and seven against Holy Family Catholic. The top grouping of Chase Ellingson (3-4-7), Will Blake (3-3-6) and Tyler Scott (2-4-6), along with Austin Heidiemann (3-1-4), has done most of the scoring.
