Minnetonka at Edina
7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 12

Any chance at catching Edina for the Lake Conference title is gone, but Minnetonka is one of the few teams to put a scare into the Hornets all year.

In a game officially called a 3-3 tie in the quarterfinals of the Schwan Cup Gold division on Dec. 29, the Skippers won in a shootout to knock Edina from the championship round. It’s one of just three games all year the Hornets haven’t celebrated as a victory — and most assuredly felt like a defeat to coach Curt Giles and his players.

No. 2-2A Edina (20-1-2, 6-0) got its revenge on the Skippers a few weeks later, winning 6-2 on Jan. 24 at the Pagel Activity Center in Minnetonka. Garrett Wait (21-40-61) netted a hat trick and an assist, while Ben Copeland (6-11-17) and Dylan Malmquist (23-37-60) each had two points.

Since the tie, the Hornets are 11-0-0 and have scored fewer than five goals just twice in those games. That Edina offense is clicking.

No. 13-2A Minnetonka (12-10-1, 3-4) just snapped a five-game losing streak last Saturday, upending Wayzata 5-1 behind goals from Jake Klein (1-0-1), Pierson Pass (3-3-6), Max Cavanaugh (5-1-6), Ty Cousineau (1-2-3) and leading scorer Gavin Payne (13-20-33).
