William Blake shot Breck into state.

In the Class 1A, Section 2 final at the Parade Ice Garden, the Mustangs’ junior forward scored the game-winning goal with 2 minutes, 10 seconds left in the second overtime to send Breck to its 11th state tournament.

After 2 hours and 48 minutes of hockey, Blake found himself alone on the wing and put a wrist shot high over the glove of Delano goalie Tyler Rizzardi to end the game 3-2. Rizzardi, a senior, kept the Tigers alive, making 43 saves in the loss.

Shooting for its first state tournament berth, Delano hung with Breck until the end. The two teams combined for three goals in the games’ final 3:41 to force overtime.

Down 1-0 for most of the game, Delano tied the score 1-1 with just 3:41 to play on Jeff Linna’s goal.

Breck’s Chase Ellingson scored what many believed would be the game-winner when he made it 2-1 with 2:34 left.

However, with its goalie pulled, Delano’s leading scorer, sophomore Ben Meyers, tied the score 2-2 on a great individual effort with 37 seconds remaining and the teams went into overtime.

Breck’s Tyler Lindstrom scored the game’s first goal with 54 seconds left in the first period, and Breck’s Stephen Headrick made 21 saves for the win.

Breck knocked Delano out of last year’s section tournament as well with a 5-2 victory in the semifinals. Breck lost to Orono in the finals 2-1.

In its 10 Class 1A state appearances, Breck has won four championships. Its 22 Class 1A tournament wins is second to Warroad’s 27.
