Breck at St. Cloud Apollo
7:15 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 7

Breck meets St. Cloud Apollo Thursday night at the St. Cloud Municipal Athletic Center in a Class 1A nonconference showdown between two teams that did quite well for themselves during December.

St. Cloud Apollo enters the new year with an impressive 10-1-0 record. The No. 3-1A Eagles are averaging nearly five goals per game while allowing just 1.36. Moreover, Apollo’s penalty kill is at 98 percent (47-of-48) as the Eagles have been impressive in all areas of their game.

Senior wing Gino Lucia leads Apollo in scoring, totaling 11 goals and 15 points in 11 games, while fellow senior forward Brandon Bissett has nine goals and 21 points and steady senior defenseman Tanner Breidenbach has eight goals and 20 points, as the three make up the bulk of Apollo’s offensive production to date.

In net, senior Nick Althaus has been impressive, bringing a .932 save percentage into this week, along with a 1.36 goals-against average.

Breck, meanwhile, has been playing an aggressive schedule with teams from the metro and outstate, and have a 10-3 record to show for it. The No. 2-1A Mustangs fell to a red-hot Rosemount team in the Schwan Cup Silver Division semifinals before bowing out with a 6-1 loss to St. Michael-Albertville.

Despite this setback, Breck's resume remains stacked with quality wins as seven of its 10 victories are against teams ranked in either class. The Mustangs have had an effective penalty kill as well, squashing all but five of 37 situations (87 percent efficiency).

Senior forward Chase Ellingson continues to produce offensively for the Mustangs, having 14 goals and 22 assists to his credit at the start of January.
