Duluth East vs. Minnetonka

3 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 6

Minnetonka and Duluth East are two of the most battle-tested Class 2A teams in the state, both remaining unbeaten through the first month of the season despite facing overtime at least three times.

Despite losing a shootout to St. Thomas Academy after a 3-3 tie in the Schwan’s Cup Gold Division final, the No. 2-2A Skippers (10-0-2, 1-0-0) had a successful showing in the tournament by knocking off No. 1-2A Edina 5-2 and Hill-Murray 4-2. Denver prospect Bobby Brink (5-14-19) leads his team in assists, but found his scoring touch in the third period against the Cadets, netting two goals to force overtime and keep Minnetonka’s unbeaten streak alive.

The Skippers, anchored by a defense that’s allowed 1.92 goals per game, will have to weather the offensive prowess of a Duluth East team that’s had its scoring streaks this season.

Three times this season the No. 4-2A Greyhounds scored all of their goals in a single period which has brought mixed results. Duluth East (6-0-3) scored six goals in the second period of its 6-5 win over No. 19-2A Lakeville North last Thursday and both of its goals in a 2-2 tie against Blaine a day later. Garret Worth (13-6-19) combined for six points in those games.
