Roseau vs. Moorhead

6 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 10

Moorhead owns one of the state tournament’s most confounding streaks, having lost all eight of the championship games in which it has played. The streak speaks to the Spuds’ amazing consistency — they have appeared in the Class 2A, Section 8 title game for most of the last two decades. Of course, it also points to Moorhead’s inability to win the big one (see also: Super Bowl, Minnesota Vikings and Buffalo Bills).

The Spuds' biggest section rival over the years? That would be Roseau, which has seven state championships, the most recent coming in 2007. The Rams (3-2-1, 0-1-0) opened the season with back-to-back losses to Thief River Falls (2-1 on Nov. 26) and Maple Grove (3-2 on Nov. 29), but have since won three straight. They’re led in scoring by Max Strand, a sophomore who has five goals and three assists.

Senior forward Cullen Gess has been on a scoring tear for the Spuds (4-1-0, 1-0-0), notching at least one goal in each of his last four games.
