Prairie Centre vs. Breckenridge/Wahpeton

7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 3

Head north and west, then drive, drive and drive some more and you’ll likely go through or past the amalgamation of towns (Browerville, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle, Melrose and Sauk Centre), that comprise the Prairie Centre program. Hang a left south of Fargo, and there you find Breckenridge and it’s co-op partner Wahpeton, across the Red River in North Dakota.

This game, however, is less about geography and more about mostly unnoticed scoring phenoms. Breckenridge/Wahpeton (7-4-0) senior Jase Jensen, in his fifth varsity season, has 11 goals this season and 112 for his career, placing him just ahead of Warroad’s Brock Nelson (currently playing for the New York Islanders) on the state’s all-time charts.

Prairie Centre (3-7-0, 2-2-0) has a potential all-time scorer of its own in freshman Eli Fletcher, the team’s goal-leader this season with 15. The 5-foot-7, 185-pound Fletcher has at least one goal in all but one of the North Stars’ games this season. Fletcher made a big splash on the varsity squad last season as an eighth grader, amassing 19 goals in 24 games.
