Mahtomedi (11-4-0, 5-2-0) is sky high after Saturday’s 3-2 upset of No. 8-2A Hill-Murray, a Pioneers team that beat the No. 6-1A Zephyrs 6-1 on Dec. 3.
Mahtomedi sophomore goaltender Ben Dardis is on an incredible roll, having made 57 saves in the win over Hill-Murray. He registered three consecutive shutouts earlier in the season.
Orono, meanwhile, has defeated all comers with the exception of No. 1-1A St. Cloud Cathedral, which handed the Spartans (13-1-1, 5-0-0) their lone loss — 6-3 on Dec. 19.
Spartans senior Zack Simon is one of the state’s hottest scorers, as he is tied for sixth in points with 39 (19 goals, 20 assists).
