Swanson was wowed by Minneosta high school hockey after moving from Wisconsin. His son WIll was the starting goaltender for Mahtomedi at the 2015 Class 1A state tournament.
Still, with some prodding, they’ll wax poetic about the greatness of Rochester John Marshall’s Lecy brothers in the 1970s, Duluth East legend Dave Spehar’s trio of state tournament hat tricks in 1995 or Kyle Rau’s championship-winning goal for Eden Prairie in triple overtime in 2011.
Swanson, 61, wasn’t exposed to high school hockey while growing up in Appleton, Wisconsin. After moving to Minnesota, he remembers being wowed by Ben Marshall, the former star defenseman for Mahtomedi.
“He was the first high school player that I saw that made my jaw drop,” Swanson said.
