The first wave of Mahtomedi goals weren’t pretty.

Mahtomedi’s JD Metz was whacking and hacking at the puck like a machete-wielding explorer in the Amazon. Twice in the first period, Metz was rewarded with goals for getting to what Zephyrs coach Jeff Poeschl called the “dirty areas” of the rink.

“He’s just got that tenacious, this-puck-is-mine kind of attitude when he is in front of the net,” Poeschl said about Metz after No. 1-seeded Mahtomedi defeated New Ulm 6-0 in the Class 1A state quarterfinals Wednesday.

Tom Paradise followed Metz’s trailblazing lead, converting a loose puck in the crease into a first-period goal as the Zephyrs (22-6-1) built a 3-0 lead.

First report

Sophomore forward JD Metz scored twice on rebounds in the first period to ignite a Mahtomedi scoring onslaught on Wednesday that ended in a 6-0 Class 1A quarterfinal blowout of New Ulm.

The No. 1-seeded Zephyrs (22-6-1) also got two goals from senior Tom Paradise and another from Paradise’s twin brother, Joe, as they cruised past the unseeded Eagles (17-9-1).

Kory Pilarski added a goal nine seconds into the third period for Mahtomedi, which outshot New Ulm 26-3 in the first period and 15-3 in the second.
