Terry Abram was four-year defenseman at South St. Paul whose brief stint as goalie forced rule change

Terry Abram had no business playing hockey, much less climbing out of bed.

It was the winter of 1965, and Abram was a senior defenseman starring for powerful South St. Paul. The Packers were scheduled to play West St. Paul (now Henry Sibley High School) and Abram was battling a fever. His prospects of playing didn’t look good.

“My mom wasn’t going to let me go to the game because I had a temperature of 101,” Abram said.

Abram, of course, talked his way into going to the rink.

The five goals the fever-stricken Abram scored in the Packers’ victory would make for a good story in itself. But the way Abram tells it, that part is merely a footnote.

The most amazing chapter in Abram’s performance that day was his brief stint as a goaltender.

West St. Paul had been awarded a penalty shot when South St. Paul coach Charles “Lefty” Smith signaled Abram over to the bench.

“He called me over and said, 'You are going in goal, ' ” Abram said. “I said, ‘What should I do? He said, ‘Do whatever comes natural.’ ”

As the West St. Paul player skated toward him, Abram said he noticed the player dropped his head to look at the puck. Abram darted out of the goal and made the save on a hurried shot attempt.

“The next season the high school league changed the rule where you had to be goalie (to contest) a penalty shot,” Abram said. “Not many people remember that.”

A varsity regular starting as a freshman, Abram was a do-it-all defenseman who made two trips to the state tournament.

In 1962, with Abram already a standout as a freshman and senior Doug Woog grabbing the spotlight as a high-scoring senior forward, South St. Paul lost 5-2 to Roseau in the semifinals. The Packers beat Greenway 2-1 to place third.

“It came pretty easy to him,” said Al Palodichuk, a senior on South St. Paul’s 1964-65 team, about Abram, who also was an All-State football player. “Us other poor slobs had to work at it. He was a natural.”

After suffering playoff disappointments in 1963 and 1964, the Packers finally reached the state tournament again with Abram as a senior in 1965. They beat Minneapolis Southwest 4-1 in the quarterfinals, then faced unbeaten International Falls in the semis.

Abram scored the only South St. Paul goal, on an end-to-end rush in the second period, as eventual champion International Falls won 5-1. Abram and South St. Paul teammate Bob Hocking were named to the all-tournament team.

“We played in the old (St. Paul) Auditorium,” Abram said. “The atmosphere was fabulous, absolutely fabulous.”

Abram was a member of the inaugural class inducted into South St. Paul’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007. He also is a member of the University of North Dakota’s hockey hall of fame. Abram was a three-year letterwinner and first team All American in 1968 while playing for the Fighting Sioux.

After completing his college career, Abram said he turned down an opportunity to play for the Chicago Blackhawks. He coached seven seasons in Roseau from 1970-77, leading the Rams to the state tournament three times (in 1971, 75 and 77).

He went on to coach high school hockey at Anoka, where he also served as the school’s principal.
