For a kid infatuated with hockey, Roseau isn’t so much a sleepy northern Minnesota town as it is a wonderland of skates and sticks and pucks.
Don’t forget about the ice. Ah yes, the ice.
Roseau’s indoor hockey arenas (three) outnumber the town’s stoplights (two).
“It’s awesome,” said Aaron Ness, who growing up took full advantage of Roseau’s abundant hockey resources. “Of all the rinks when I was there, they were all open all day long.
“You could skate at 2 a.m. if you wanted to. We did a couple of times, too. To be able to skate like that for free, whenever you want, it’s unheard of.”
Ness grew up in the heart of Roseau, which in 2009 had estimated population of 2,751. He lived across the street from the high school (which of course has its own arena) and just a few blocks down from the fabled “North Rink.”

Built and maintained by hockey boosters and volunteers, the North Rink is home to never-ending pick-up games open to players of all ages. The rink’s one rule: “Last one out shuts off the lights.”
Beyond all the free ice time, Ness was exposed to elite-level coaching at every turn. As an eighth-grader on the Bantam team, he skated for former Roseau High School and University of Minnesota star Aaron Broten, who played 748 regular season games in the NHL.
“That was a huge year for me,” Ness said about playing for Broten. “He knows the game so well, he taught me a lot of the little things. He would put in the extra time with us. He made sure he got the best out of every one of his players.”
Ness, whose father, Jay, was a Roseau high school standout who went on to play at the University of North Dakota, stepped into the Rams’ varsity lineup as a freshman. He scored 21 points (3 goals, 18 assists) that season as Roseau reached the state 2006 state tournament (the Rams lost both their games).
It was a mere appetizer of what was to come.
In 2006-07, Ness had one of the most successful sophomore seasons in state history. He racked up 51 points on 13 goals and 38 assists and was the lynchpin of a Rams team that beat Woodbury, Rochester Century and Grand Rapids in succession en route to Roseau’s seventh state championship.
“That was unbelievable,” Ness said about winning the state Class 2A title. “Everybody says it, and maybe it is cliché, but there is nothing like it.

“You talk about it right now and you get chills. You are there with your buddies, the kids you grew up with. It’s not just winning it for yourself, but for the families of all the players and the city of Roseau.”
After all his success as a sophomore, Ness, who doubled his course load as a junior so he could graduate a year early, might as well have worn a blaze orange jersey in 2007-08.
“He really drew a lot more attention,” said former Roseau coach Scott Oliver. “Still, he had a very, very good junior year.
“Mentally, he was very focused. Very mentally tough, very coachable. We couldn’t have him on the ice enough, because when he was on the ice the puck was coming out of our end.”
Oliver typically played Ness more and more toward the end of the season. By the playoffs, Ness left the ice only when it was an absolute requirement.
“I said, ‘He gets a break when the Zamboni comes on the ice,’ ” Oliver said with a laugh. “When there was a face off in our end I made sure he was on the ice.”
Ness was the state’s top-scoring defenseman during his junior/senior season with 28 goals and 44 assists for 72 points in 31 games. He was an astounding plus-67 that season, further testament to his value to the Rams.
Roseau again reached the state tournament in 2008. The Rams were ousted by eventual champion Hill-Murray in the semifinals and finished fourth.
Ness was named to the all-tournament team for the second consecutive season and concluded his high school career by being named Mr. Hockey. He is the only Roseau player to ever win the award honoring the state’s best senior.
“It’s special,” Ness said about being named Mr. Hockey. “You look at the list of names of players who have won it. It is a good category to be in.”
Ness, who was selected 40th overall in the 2008 NHL Draft by the New York Islanders, played three seasons at the University of Minnesota before signing a pro contract last spring.
He spent the summer working out in the Twin Cities in preparation for training camp with the Islanders.
