Robb Stauber can’t say exactly when or why he became a goaltender.
Some things just sort of happen.
“I can’t even imagine what I was thinking,” Stauber says with a laugh.
Stauber does have a few early childhood memories from his days playing on Duluth’s outdoor rinks. Most of them involve intense pain.
He remembers freezing his hands. He remembers freezing his feet. He remembers the sting of puck after puck whipping into unprotected parts of his body. Padding or not, most every shot left some sort of welt.
“The equipment we had back then sucked,” Stauber said.
Playing against kids five, six and seven years older might have been hard on Stauber’s body, but it was great for his development. The aggressive, challenge-the-shooter style that served Stauber so well in a career that took him all the way to the NHL was born out of necessity on those outdoor rinks.
“I was taking shots from high school kids when I was 10,” said Stauber, the second youngest of six brothers – all of them hockey players. “Everything hurt. I thought to myself, ‘I am just going to get closer to (the shooter).’
“I thought that way, instead of the puck hitting me in the chest and shoulders, where it hurt more, it would hit me in the legs and at least and I’ll survive. I learned to play that way purely by getting hurt a lot as a kid.”
The Stauber boys were part of a large group of talented hockey players coming out of Duluth’s Piedmont neighborhood in the 1970s and ’80s. Robb said his youth teams were regularly winning state championships, and that success was expected to continue at the high school level at Duluth Denfeld.
Denfeld had perhaps its most talented team of that era in 1983-84, Stauber’s sophomore season. The Hunters were undefeated heading into the Section 2 semifinals, where they were stunned 3-2 by St. Cloud Apollo.
Duluth East knocked Denfeld out of the playoffs the following season with a 3-2 triumph in the section quarterfinals. That left one final season for Stauber and the Hunters to reach the state tournament.
“It’s one of the things that, growing up in Minnesota, you just dream of doing,” Stauber said about playing in the state tournament. “Seeing it year after year, it was something that was attainable.
“I had set my sights on playing in that tournament since I was eight years old.”
After slipping past Duluth East 2-1 in the section quarterfinals, Duluth Denfeld beat St. Cloud Apollo 8-2 and Anoka 6-2 to roar into the state tournament. The Hunters weren’t done yet. They beat Bloomington Jefferson 4-2 in the quarterfinals to earn a shot at defending champion Burnsville in the semifinals.
“Robb was very good down the stretch that season,” said Duluth East coach Mike Randolph, who was an assistant coach at Denfeld in 1985-86. “He was in a bit of lull at midseason, but he came out of it and was outstanding down the stretch. Once we started the playoffs, he played his best hockey.
Stauber, Denfeld’s MVP for three straight seasons, made 40 saves in the semifinals against a Burnsville team that featured scoring sensation Scott Bloom. But the Braves (Burnsville’s nickname was later changed to Blaze) scored into an empty net with 18 seconds left to secure a 3-1 victory. Burnsville would go on to win a second-straight state title.
The Hunters won the third-place game the following day, beating Hibbing 4-2 behind Stauber’s 30-save performance.
“It was an incredible experience,” Stauber said about Denfeld’s 1986 state tournament run. “When you achieve a lifelong dream, it’s an incredible thing.
“Anything that happened after high school was gravy.”

Stauber wasn’t heavily recruited coming out of high school. He turned down a scholarship offer to play at U.S. International in San Diego to walk on at the University of Minnesota.
Randolph said he suspected it wouldn’t take Stauber long to work himself into the starting rotation with the Gophers.
“I thought Robb was probably as mature a player as I have ever coached as far as being really focused and being a student of the game as far as his position,” Randolph said. “He was a very competitive player, a very competitive kid. He had all the ingredients of a top player at (the Division I) level.”
Two years later Stauber won the Hobey Baker Award, becoming just the second sophomore – and first goaltender – to be named the nation’s top collegiate player. He was nominated for the award again the following season, and went on to play 10 years of professional hockey. Stauber appeared in 62 NHL games, most of them with the Los Angeles Kings from 1992-94.
Stauber is the owner and president of Goalcrease Inc., a company that specializes in goaltender training and has facilities in Edina and Stillwater.
