Some seventh graders from Elk River made a prediction a few years back.

On Saturday night those girls, now varsity volleyball players, turned their prediction into reality, leading the Elks to the first state tournament berth in program history.

Elk River knocked off Forest Lake in three straight sets — 25-21, 25-22, 25-21 — in the Class 3A, Section 7 title game played at Andover Saturday, and Elks coach Theresa Brummer said that prediction a few years back was no idle boast.

"These girls have done all the work you can possibly do to get ready for this night," she said following her team's victory. "They predicted as seventh graders that they would go to state, and now they have done it."

Elk River traveled a difficult road as the No. 4 seed in the section: On Tuesday the Elks beat top-seeded Andover on the Huskies' home floor, setting up Saturday's battle with the No. 2 seeded Rangers.

First report
