A physical, highly-competitive game with a combined 20 penalties between Eden Prairie and Brainerd/ Little Falls led to an entertaining overtime finish Thursday. The Eagles needed their best performers to capitalize on advantages, like the power play, to get the job done.

The duo of Sydney Langseth and Grace Kuipers created all four goals for the Eagles (1-0-1, 0-0) in a 4-3 overtime win against the Warriors (1-1, 0-0).

“I think in general when they’re on the ice they change the game, and even though teams come in not wanting them to beat them, they still do,” Eden Prairie coach Jaime Grossman said. “Teams know who they are and try to shut them down. Even when you try to tackle them, you just can’t shut them down. They’re playing at an elite level right now.”

With a combined seven points, Langseth (a goal and three assists) helped Kuipers get a hat trick that was capped by the game-winning goal in overtime.

“I was kind of just really excited because on the power play we worked really well, so I think it was just dependent on what was open, and it was just a matter of time before we set something up,” Kuipers said about her third goal.

First report

Eden Prairie outlasted Brainerd/ Little Falls 4-3 in overtime Thursday night to pick up its first win of the season.

Grace Kuipers scored the game-winning goal on a 5-on-3 power play. Sydeny Langseth made a cross-ice pass that found Kuipers perfectly, and she was able to shoot it into the bottom left corner of the net to secure the win.

The goal completed a hat trick for Kuipers, who was assisted by Langseth each time. Langseth also scored the Eagles (1-0-1, 0-0) first goal in the first period.

The Warriors' Lucy Peterson tied the game at 1-1 with a deflection off a Reagan Aus shot early in the second period.

Gabrielle Smith scored on a penalty shot to give the Warriors (1-1, 0-0) a 2-1 lead midway through the second period. She scored her second of the game on the power play to tie the game at 3-3 and send it to overtime.

Brainerd/ Little Falls goalie Breya Sawyer stopped 30 shots, while Molly Goergen had 21 saves for Eden Prairie.
