The Tartan boys' hockey team was reeling from a 7-3 loss to Hastings just three days before Friday's showdown with visiting Thief River Falls.

What a difference one game can make.

In the annual home-and-home matchup between the two programs located more than five hours apart, an early third-period goal by Bo Strecker helped Tartan (2-2-0, 0-1-0) hold on to a one-goal lead for a 2-1 victory.

After enduring a two-game losing streak, the win against the traditional Class 1A power had the Titans cheering as they left the ice for their locker room.

"It's nice to get the first home win of the season and beat a good team like Thief River, ranked higher than you," Strecker said.
