In preparation for his team’s biggest game of the season thus far, White Bear Lake coach Tim Sager said his team only had a 30-minute skate with 12 out of 36 players yesterday for practice.

Why the lack of participation ahead of a matchup against perhaps the program’s biggest rival?

“We had eight guys with the flu,” Sager said. “We had a bunch of guys that are so sick.”

The fatigue from an influenza breakout for the Bears (6-0-1, 4-0-0) showed at times in their 3-2 overtime win over the Pioneers (6-1-0, 4-0-0) at Aldrich Arena in Maplewood, but they found energy when they needed it most.

“They showed a lot of guts to suck it up, and that’s what you get out of a senior-laden team,” Sager said. “This is my most senior-laden team with 12 guys. It was calm on the bench.”

First Report

White Bear Lake came up with two dramatic goals, including one from Sam Newpower with 15 seconds left in regulation, to defeat east metro rival Hill-Murray in overtime at Aldrich Arena in Maplewood on Tuesday night.

With time running out in regulation, White Bear Lake, ranked No. 7 in the Class 2A coaches’ poll, had plenty of traffic in front of the net with the extra attacker on and Newpower sent in a shot from distance that Hill-Murray goalie Remington Keopple didn’t see until it was in the net.

The Bears (6-0-1, 4-0-0) fed off that momentum in overtime, as they seemed more likely to score. They got their first power play of the game in the bonus period and Billy Rose converted on a one-timer from teammate Lleyton Roed.

White Bear Lake struck first late in the first period with a close-range shot from Ethan Moerke.

The Pioneers (6-1-0, 4-0-0) took control of the game after Moerke’s tally, but they couldn’t find the back of the net until midway through the third period. Triston Tabucol tied the game at 1-1 after he was sent in on a breakaway from a long-range pass from Nick Mountain. A power-play goal from Charlie Strobel gave the No. 3-2A Pioneers a 2-1 lead with 4:32 left.
