Sometimes goals are as scarce as rare gemstones. Shots sail wide. Pucks hit posts. Goalies make stunning saves.

All that happens enough and a player can become reluctant to shoot. Let someone else negotiate a deal with the hockey gods.

Such is life for Lucas Jorgenson, who burst on the high school scene a year ago, scoring 19 goals and totaling 54 points in what was the very definition of a breakout season.

Goals haven’t come as regularly this winter for Jorgenson, who can count his season total on one hand. And that’s including his overtime winner with 4.5 seconds left on Saturday afternoon in a 4-3 triumph over Cloquet-Esko-Carlton at the Victoria Ice Arena.

First Report

Lucas Jorgenson scored with 4.5 seconds left in overtime to lift Holy Family Catholic to a 4-3 victory over Cloquet-Esko-Carlton on Saturday at Victory Ice Arena.

Jorgenson, one of just two seniors on the Holy Family roster, whipped a shot from the slot just inside the left goalpost to secure the win for the Fire (12-9-0, 6-1-0), who were coming off a 7-1 loss to Andover, ranked No. 1 in the Class 2A coaches’ poll, on Tuesday.

The Lumberjacks (12-9-1, 3-1-0) rallied from a 3-2 deficit in the third, with Darian Durand forcing overtime with his goal with 5:20 remaining.

After a scoreless first period, Cloquet-Esko-Carlton’s Brayden Tyman and Holy Family’s Trey Fechko traded second-period goals.

Christian Galatz gave the Lumberjacks their only lead, at 2-1, midway through the third period. Goals by Nick Strand and Nick Blood put the Fire ahead 3-2.

Cloquet-Esko-Carlton goaltender Owen Carlson finished with 36 saves while Holy Family’s Dylan Halliwill had 27.
