Equal parts pond hockey and rugby, Saturday’s first-team-to-10 wins game between Lakeville South and Prior Lake was as unexpected as palm trees in the Arctic.

Prior Lake’s hero in its 8-6 triumph at Dakotah! Ice Center was a bit of a surprise, too.

Senior forward Hunter Lincoln scored twice in the third period, boosting his season goal total to six. Lincoln, who hadn’t scored since Jan. 7, managed to fling a Lakeville South defender aside as he broke into the Cougars’ zone late in the third period. Free of his human backpack, he then mimicked Lakers’ sophomore Alex Bump’s signature toe drag before beating Lakeville South's (15-7-0, 11-4-0) standout goaltender, Cody Ticen.

“He does that toe drag all the time,” Lincoln said. “So I was thinking about it. I tried it, and it worked.”

First Report

Senior Hunter Lincoln scored twice in the third period to help catapult Prior Lake to a wild 8-6 victory over Lakeville South on Saturday in an uncharacteristically high-scoring game for the two South Suburban Conference leaders.

Lincoln gave Prior Lake, ranked No. 8 in the Class 2A coaches’ poll, a 6-5 lead with 7:24 remaining on a solo rush that required him to shrug off a backchecking Lakeville South player before cruising in along on the Cougars' goal.

Lakers sophomore Sam Rice scored less a minute after Lincoln to put Prior Lake (16-5-3, 10-4-2) ahead 7-5. Lincoln’s empty-net goal with 30 seconds remaining helped clinch the victory.

Griffin Ludtke scored in the third to pull Lakeville South (15-7-0, 11-4-0) to within 7-6.

Sophomore Trevor Boschee made 24 saves for Prior Lake. Cody Ticen had 18 stops for Lakeville South.
