Practical jokes and one-liners were as much a part of the Grand Rapids locker room scene during the 1979-80 season as towels and rolls of tape.
Fun-loving doesn’t begin to describe these Indians.
Think equal parts Animal House and Slapshot.
“All teams have personalities, and that 79-80 team was really something,” said Rod “Buzzy” Christensen, the Indians’ coach that season. “Of the 20 guys, we had half a dozen that … let’s just say they enjoyed their pranks.
“There were a lot of peaks and valleys as far as did they want to play hard or not play hard.”

One player Christensen didn’t have to worry about was his goaltender. Jon Casey was a senior that season, and Casey brought a blast-furnace intensity to the Indians’ eclectic mix.
“The guy practiced as hard as any human being – ever,” said John DeCenzo, a Grand Rapids senior forward in 1979-80. “If you scored on him in practice he was pissed.
“You talk about how loose that team was. Jon was someone who was the opposite. He was so focused.”
Casey was the sort of player who would rather chew thumbtacks than allow a goal, much less lose a game. Grand Rapids, which had won the state tournament’s consolation title in 1979, faced high expectations entering the 1979-80 season. The Indians started slowly, and struggled at times late in the season, too.
Casey had zero tolerance for anything less than an all-out effort.
“During one game late in the season he was so teed off at the performance of the team he just left,” Christensen said. “He pulled himself, and he went to the locker room.”
Grand Rapids finally caught stride in the playoffs. The Indians (now known as the Thunderhawks) beat International Falls 4-1 in the Section 7 title game to earn a trip to the state tournament.
Casey made just nine stops in Grand Rapids’ 8-3 thumping of Hopkins Lindbergh in the state quarterfinals.
Grand Rapids had entered the tournament with five losses. Only Lindbergh (with six losses) and East Grand Forks (seven) had worse records among the eight teams.

Rising metro power Bloomington Jefferson, with a 20-1-2 record and one of the state’s most electric forwards in Jay North, awaited Grand Rapids in the semifinals.
The Jaguars fired 23 shots on Casey, but managed only a first-period goal. Casey made 10 of his stops in the final period.
“I just remember their goaltending was outstanding,” said North, who had several quality chances turned aside by Casey.
Former Jefferson defenseman Tom Kurvers also has images of Casey making save after stunning save burned in his memory.
“It’s not that often an NHL goaltender is coming through the high school ranks and taking his team to a state high school tournament,” Kurvers said. “And we lose to Jon Casey.”
As good as Casey was against the Jaguars, he was even better in the title game against Hill-Murray. Casey made 31 saves in the Indians’ 2-1 victory. Grand Rapids stunned the previously unbeaten Pioneers despite mustering just 16 shots on goal.
“There was no way we would have made it where we did without him,” DeCenzo said. “We got outshot in a few games. But we knew who we had back there, too.”
Casey’s title-game performance still ranks among the best by a goaltender in state tournament history.
“As far as overall talent, I don’t’ think we had as much talent as (Hill-Murray) did,” Christensen said. “With Jon in the net, everybody knew we had a chance.”
Casey won a national championship at North Dakota in 1982 and backstopped the Minnesota North Stars to the Stanley Cup finals in 1991. He played in 425 regular season NHL games and retired from pro hockey in 1998. Among Minnesota-born goaltenders, only Evelelth's Frank Brimsek played in more NHL games (514).
Casey lives in the St. Louis area.
