Original Mr. Hockey Tom Chorske of Minneapolis Southwest scored 44 goals as a senior in 1985

Minneapolis high school hockey was well into its descent in the mid-1980s.

The balance of metro power had shifted south to Bloomington, where the newer, behemoth Kennedy and Jefferson high schools were routinely churning out Division I college players and championship-caliber teams.

Section realignment after the 1980 state tournament wasn’t kind to Minneapolis Southwest. The Lakers, who had just made their 15th state tournament trip, now found themselves in a section with the Bloomington schools.

In a grim forerunner of the decade to come, Minneapolis Southwest lost to Bloomington Jefferson 7-2 in the 1981 Section 5 finals.

From 1982 through 1989, the section championship was an all-Bloomington affair seven of the eight years. The lone exception was Kennedy’s 3-0 win over Blake in 1983.

Tom Chorske was a youth hockey sensation growing up in Minneapolis. One of the last great city players, he made Minneapolis West’s varsity hockey team as a freshman during the 1981-82 season.

West closed in 1982, and Chorske spent his next three seasons playing for talent-starved Minneapolis Southwest.

“There were some invitations to go to some other schools,” Chorske said. “We were never going to move for that reason, to put myself in a better hockey community.

“I try to use that story sometimes when you see or hear of kids jostling around, trying to improve their hockey visibility. I remain confident that good players will be discovered.”

Chorske, certainly, was impossible to miss. He stood 6 feet and weighed a rock-solid 185 pounds as a senior.

“He was so much bigger and stronger than everyone else,” said Chris May, a former Southwest standout who graduated a year ahead of Chorske. “Players would bounce off him. It was like a great college player playing against high schoolers.”

Chorske possessed a wicked shot, but it was his skating that distanced him from the pack.

“He would take two strides and be at full speed,” May said. “You could kind of hear him coming he was so powerful. The way his skates dug into the ice was kind of freakish.”

May was a senior and Chorske a junior in 1984 when Southwest squared off against heavily favored Bloomington Kennedy in the Section 5 semifinals at the Met Sports Center in Bloomington.

The Lakers had defeated Breck 6-5 two days earlier, and were still recovering from the physically draining slugfest. May had a deep thigh bruise and Chorske was battling the flu bug, yet Kennedy needed a goal late in the third period to escape with a 3-2 victory. The Eagles went on to finish second at the state tournament.

Chorske, who also was Southwest's starting quarterback for two seasons, scored 44 goals and added 26 assists for a state-best 70 points as a senior in 1985, when he was named the inaugural winner of the Mr. Hockey award.

Among the luminaries at the Mr. Hockey award presentation that spring were state coaching icons Herb Brooks, John Mariucci and Larry Ross.

“I remember Herb Brooks presenting me with the trophy,” Chorske said. “That was pretty big hockey royalty at the head table. I’m pretty proud of that.”

Chorske also has fond memories of Twin Cities championship games his junior and senior seasons. With Chorske as a junior, Southwest beat a St. Paul Johnson team that featured standouts Jim Hau and Dewey Wahlin. The Lakers lost to a St. Thomas Academy team led by Randy Skarda and Dan Brooks the following year.

“Aldrich Arena was rocking, there were kids hanging from the rafters,” Chorske said about the 1984 Twin Cities title game matchup against Johnson. “That was a great era for city high school hockey. Certainly it was the peak for me.

“On the negative side, never making it to the state tournament was a big one.”

Chorske was drafted 16th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in 1985. He played three seasons for the University of Minnesota. His career with the Gophers was interrupted in 1987-88 when he played for the U.S. national team leading up to the 1988 Olympics. He was one of the last players cut from the Olympic team.

Chorske played in 596 NHL games and won a Stanley Cup title with the New Jersey Devils in 1995. He retired from pro hockey in 2001 and now works as a television analyst for FSN’s hockey broadcasts.

Chorske, who also works in insurance and benefits at The Christensen Group, lives in Edina with his wife, Kristie, and their children, Brett, 10, Hannah 9, and Andrew, 5.
