If one game is any indication, Mahtomedi's passing game will be a handful for opponents to try and contain for the remainder of this season.

Friday's cold weather didn’t stop quarterback Jonathon DeVore from passing for four touchdowns and more than 300 yards in the first half of Mahtomedi’s 41-14 victory over Hill-Murray (1-1, 1-1) at Mahtomedi High School.

An offensive showing like the one on display Friday would stand out for a high school team in any year. However, it’s even more impressive considering schools around the state didn’t know they’d get a fall football season until about four weeks ago.

The Zephyrs (2-0, 1-0) might not have as large of a playbook as they’d have in a typical season, but coach Dave Muetzel said he’s otherwise impressed with how the team is playing in what’s been an atypical year.

"The kids have been working hard and doing a real nice job, and everyone's in the same boat," Muetzel said. "So we just kind of go with it. I'm happy we're able to be out here playing."

First Report

Chilly fall weather did nothing to slow a dominant Mahtomedi passing attack led by quarterback Jonathon DeVore in a 41-14 Suburban Grey subdistrict victory at home over Hill-Murray on Friday night.

DeVore had a dominant first half, producing four touchdown passes and more than 300 yards through the air to give the Zephyrs (2-0, 1-0) to a 27-0 halftime lead over the Pioneers (1-1, 1-1).

Mahtomedi's Dominick Livingston and Ethan Loss each caught two touchdown passes in the 27-point victory. DeVore connected with Livingston for his fifth and final TD pass of the night with 6 minutes, 39 seconds left in the game.

Joseph Koch and Maxwell Nicholson each caught touchdown passes for Hill-Murray in the second half. Koch’s TD was in the third quarter and Nicholson’s tally came late in the fourth quarter.
