A Kid Cudi song blared full volume through a locker room Lakeville South players were using postgame. The Cougars were in a jovial mood after their lowest-scoring game of the season, but they were pleased to have met their biggest challenge to date with a win.

Lakeville South kept its perch atop the South Suburban Conference standings with a 5-2 defeat of rival Rosemount Thursday at the Rosemount Community Center.

The Cougars, ranked No. 6 in the Class 2A coaches’ poll, had outscored their opponents 28-1 entering the night. But a pair of late goals Thursday, including one late on an empty net, made a close game seem lopsided in the end.

“It’s extremely important going forward to have games like this,” said Lakeville South coach Janne Kivihalme. “We didn’t have the best start and they jumped on us right away. We were able to battle through the adversity and get back into our game.”

Lakeville South (5-0-0) trailed for the first time in nearly a year when Rosemount junior defenseman Owen Hendrikson scored 2 minutes, 35 seconds into the first period.

First Report

Lakeville South came out on top 5-2 in a clash between South Suburban Conference foes Thursday night in Rosemount.

Rosemount struck first when the Irish (3-1-1) handed the Cougars (5-0-0) their first deficit of the season when Owen Hendrikson scored just 2 minutes, 35 seconds into the game with an assist from Carson Liebaert.

Just over three minutes later, however, Lakeville South tied it at 1 apiece on an Eli Miller goal.

Tied 1-1 coming out of the first intermission, the Cougars, ranked No. 6 in the Class 2A coaches’ poll, looked poised to extend their unbeaten season as Mason Johnson and Cam Boche scored in the period’s opening 4 minutes, 30 seconds.

Liebaert notched his second point of the game when he shot from the blue line and found the back of the net with 2:15 left in the second period. The tally kept the Irish within reach despite a double-digit-shots-on-goal deficit through the first two periods.

The ice tipped Lakeville South’s way in the third period, but it wasn’t until more than 10 minutes had ticked off the game clock when the Cougars got a goal from Zander Billins from in close. Boche added his second goal of the night on an empty net to seal the victory.

Lakeville South finished with a 36 to 17 advantage in shots on goal.
