The burly Robby Kuchinski-Helgeson is good at swatting pucks in the net from just in front of the crease, a talent on display Saturday in a victory at Mound Westonka.

A shot chart showing where Little Falls senior Robby Kuchinski-Helgeson has scored all of his career goals wouldn’t require a full sheet of paper. They could all be comfortably plotted on a Post-it note. Or the back of a postage stamp.

“He’s one of our players who loves being around the net,” Little Falls senior goaltender Dane Couture said after Saturday afternoon’s 3-2 victory over Mound Westonka at Thaler Arena. “He can put pucks away for us when he’s in the dirty zone.”

The “dirty zone” for the burly 5-foot-10, 195-pound Kuchinski-Helgeson means an area about 2 to 3 feet in front of the crease. Kuchinski-Helgeson is drawn to loose pucks there like a grizzly to fresh salmon, and he has the size, strength and fortitude to slam a large percentage of them home.

“That’s where he makes his money,” Couture said.

First Report

Senior forward Robby Kuchinski-Helgeson scored twice, and senior goaltender Dane Couture stopped 17 of 19 shots as Little Falls held on for a 3-2 victory over Mound Westonka on Saturday afternoon at Thaler Arena in Mound.

The stocky Kuchinski-Helgeson, a dominating force in the corners, scored on a long-range snipe that sailed just under the crossbar 1 minute, 19 seconds into the first period to open the scoring and added a goal 44 seconds into the second period to put the Flyers ahead 3-1.

Mound Westonka sophomore Max Krebsbach tapped in a feed from junior Michael Doshan 5:01 into the third period, but the White Hawks (3-2-2) were limited to just a few quality scoring chances the rest of the way.

Senior Tauer Morrison scored his first varsity goal for Little Falls (5-1-1), No. 5 in the Class 1A coaches' rankings, in the first period. Mound Westonka junior Ethan Dominy also scored in the first.

White Hawks senior goaltender Elijah Goetz stopped 30 of 33 shots.

Mound Westonka was coming off Friday night’s 7-4 victory over New Prague. Little Falls was playing for the first time after suffering its first loss of the season, an 8-1 beatdown at the hands of No. 2-1A Gentry Academy on Thursday.
