Top performer winner

Hayden Hennen, Kittson Central. The senior defenseman tallied eight assists during the Bearcats’ 14-0 rout of Breckenridge/Wahpeton on Feb. 4, setting a new Minnesota State High School League record for assists in a single game. The previous record of seven helpers was set by two different players in 2009. Hennen was on the ice for all but one of the Bearcats’ (3-2-1, 1-0) goals, finishing the game with a plus-13 plus/minus rating.

Top performer candidates

Ben Diedrich, Waseca. The senior goaltender increased his season goals-against average to .940 after a 48-save shutout as the Bluejays (6-1, 6-1) defeated Redwood Valley 5-0 on Feb. 5. It is the highest shot total Diedrich has seen this season through seven games and was his first shutout.

Jake Keller, Wayzata. The senior forward produced back-to-back five-point games, leading the Trojans to a 7-1 victory against Buffalo on Feb. 4 and an 8-2 defeat of St. Michael-Albertville two days later. Keller scored three goals and added two assists in each win. He recorded half of his points when on the power play and helped the Trojans (5-2, 4-1) go 7-for-10 with the man-advantage during the two games.

Matt Stuessi, Southwest Christian/Richfield. The senior forward recorded a season-high five points during the Stars’ 6-2 win at St. Paul Academy on Feb. 6. After scoring the Stars’ (5-2, 1-1) first goal of the game five minutes into the first period, Stuessi scored twice shorthanded on the same penalty kill just minutes later. He rounded out his five-point effort with two second-period assists.

Andrew Torrel, Eveleth-Gilbert. Torrel and the Golden Bears battled to two ties last week, the first of which earned the senior goaltender his second shutout of the season. On Feb. 5, Torrel stopped all 41 shots he faced as the Golden Bears and Hibbing/Chisholm remained knotted at 0-0 through the overtime period. The next night, the Golden Bears (1-2-3, 1-1-2) again settled for an overtime tie, with Torrel making 41 saves for the second consecutive night as they tied Duluth Marshall 3-3.
