Character guy, clutch scorer, loving big brother, beloved captain … there are all sorts of adjectives that fit snugly on Wayzata’s Kohl Sauer.
After scoring twice in the No. 2-seeded Trojans’ 3-2 victory over No. 4 Benilde-St. Margaret’s in Wednesday’s Class 2A, Section 6 championship game at the Plymouth Ice Center, Sauer showed his versatility by belting out a few tunes in the locker room and, perhaps, earning another label.
Aspiring pop singer? Maybe, maybe not.
“I would say I am alright,” Sauer said when asked to assess his singing chops. “Nothing special.”

Senior forward Kohl Sauer scored twice and sophomore goaltender Will Ingemann made 16 saves on Wednesday night as No. 2-seed Wayzata hung on for a 3-2 victory over No. 4-seed Benilde-St. Margaret’s in the Class 2A, Section 6 championship game at the Plymouth Ice Center.
Sauer, a third-line center, was an unexpected but welcome source of offense for the Trojans (13-5-2), ranked No. 9 in the Class 2A coaches’ poll. He entered the game having scored three goals all season.
Sauer pounced on a turnover inside the Red Knights' blue line and whipped a shot past goaltender Carson Limesand’s catching glove to put Wayzata ahead 3-0 just 1:18 into the third period. Benilde-St. Margaret’s answered with a goal by defenseman Tristan Sarsland on a solo rush that took him around the Wayzata defense and in front of Ingemann, where Sarsland scored on a low shot as he powered through the slot.
The Red Knights (15-6-0) cut Wayzata’s lead to 3-2 on a rebound goal by Grant Ellings with 2:44 remaining, and pulled Limesand in favor of an extra skater with 1:47 left. Ingemann was tested several times in the closing seconds but directed initial shots to the corners or deflected them out of play.
Sauer opened the scoring for Wayzata, sliding home a rebound just 1:57 into the opening period. Senior Jake Schneider, stationed to the right of the net and just a foot or two outside the goal line, put the Trojans ahead 2-0 with 58.9 seconds left in the first by scoring on a rising wrist shut that sailed just under the crossbar. The goal was Schneider’s team-best 16th of the season.
