There were two sides to the Faribault High School boys hockey team in its season-opening game against Dodge County on Saturday night.

There was the team that was aggressive and created scoring chances, and then there was the team that took way too many trips to the penalty box.

Luckily for the Falcons, Dodge County couldn’t capitalize with Faribault in the box, and the Falcons capitalized just enough when they were out of it to down the Wildcats 5-1 at the Faribault Ice Arena.

Faribault (1-0) used goals from Luke Thom, Caleb Sevier, Jake Murray, Jake Fritz and Christian VonRuden to notch the win, its third straight over the Wildcats to begin the season. The 35 penalty minutes the team accumulated — most of which came in the final two periods — didn’t figure much into the outcome.

“Coming out and scoring three goals in the first period, that was a good period of hockey,” said Falcons coach Brad Ryan. “The second and third, that’s something we got to work on.”

Thom started the scoring with a goal 2 minutes, 17 seconds into the game when he made a nifty move around a defender and beat the goalie through the five-hole.

“Luke’s just got some unreal talent,” Ryan said. “He went down there and just totally dangled.”

Sevier scored shorthanded minutes later, and Murray followed with a slap shot that found the back of the net at 5:42.

The 3-0 lead stood after one period, but the second and third frames were penalty-heavy. Faribault goalie Jarrad Bruessel finished with 19 saves.

The Falcons begin Big 9 Conference play at 7:30 p.m. on Friday against Rochester Mayo in Rochester.
